What it involves
Retainers keep the teeth in the position reached at the end of orthodontic treatment.
Without retention, teeth tend to drift back towards their previous position: this is an expected biological response, not a failure of the treatment.
There are fixed retainers, bonded behind the teeth, and removable ones the patient takes out for cleaning.

What happens if I stop wearing them?
