What it involves

Dental cleaning removes plaque and calculus attached to the tooth, above and below the gum margin.

It includes plaque control, scaling, curettage where appropriate and polishing of the surfaces.

It is a preventive treatment: its purpose is to stop gum disease and decay from progressing.

Who it is for

  • Recommended for everyone as part of regular maintenance.
  • Particularly indicated where there is bleeding gums, tartar build-up or staining.
  • It forms part of the preparation before whitening, orthodontics or rehabilitation.

How it works

  1. 1Review of gum health and recording of the plaque index.
  2. 2Ultrasonic scaling.
  3. 3Curettage and hand instrumentation where the case requires it.
  4. 4Polishing of the tooth surfaces.
  5. 5Hygiene instructions adapted to what was observed.

Aftercare

  • Brush twice a day and clean between the teeth daily.
  • There may be mild sensitivity for a few days.
  • Keep to the check-up frequency you are given.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the appointment take?
About an hour, depending on how much calculus has built up.
How often should it be done?
Usually every three to six months. The exact frequency depends on your gum health, your hygiene and factors such as smoking.
Does it hurt?
Generally it is not painful. If the gums are inflamed or sensitive it can be more uncomfortable; it is worth saying so during the appointment.
Does it whiten teeth?
It is not a whitening treatment. It removes surface stains and restores the tooth’s natural colour, but it does not lighten the enamel’s own shade.

Is this the treatment you need?

In the consultation we review your case and explain the options.
